What is enamel?

Our grandmothers used it already: kitchen utensils and tableware made of enamel. The technique of enameling is actually very old. Enamel is created by applying a layer of powdered glass to a metal item, which fuses into a hard, smooth glaze when heated at high temperatures in an oven.
